When we think of things that expire, we usually think of milk, coupons, licenses, you know, the usual. But did you know that your makeup also has an expiration date? Unfortunately, makeup isn’t like Twinkies that can last forever!
So why doesn’t your makeup come with an expiration date on the product? Manufacturers must think that we will use up the product before it goes bad. But most women don’t use the same makeup every day. We have lots of different colors and brands to keep things fun and to create different looks for different occasions. So we may not always use our makeup up in time.
How do you know if your makeup has ‘gone bad’? Well, for starters, many women start to notice reactions on their skin from makeup that has never given them a problem before. What used to work well now irritates their skin and can even cause breakouts! Here’s a simple timeline of the life of your makeup, to help you know when to get new products.
Throw away makeup after:
- Mascara – 3 months
- Powder eye shadow – 9 to 18 months
- Cream eye shadow – 6 to 12 months
- Foundation – 6 to 8 months
- Blush – 6 to 8 months
- Lipstick – 6 to 8 months
- Powder – 8 to 12 months
So if you have makeup sitting around that you’ve had for a while, go ahead and get rid of it and replace it with some new, fun colors. Your skin will thank you and it’s always great to try new products!
