Three Ways to Keep Yourself Together

Just do a few simple things and you will feel like you can conquer any day – even crazy ones.

I can’t believe it’s already almost been a whole year since I gave birth to my beautiful baby girl. It’s been quite a roller coaster, as I’m sure all of you mothers out there can understand. There were (and are) definitely days when I didn’t feel well enough, or didn’t get enough sleep during the night to get up and accomplish my huge list of tasks I had posted on the fridge door.

This piece of advice came from a friend who heard it from her doctor at her first postpartum check up. It has been a great help for me, helped me feel like I am a woman, I am put-together, and I am not simply a milk machine running around my house in sweats. I think it’s advice that may be helpful for us to remember at various times in our lives when things get crazy, not just necessarily right after a new baby comes into our lives.

“Do these few things each day, and you will feel like a beautiful human being: put your face on, make your bed, and eat healthily.”

  1. Put your face on – I never realized that some days this might not actually happen, because some days I never leave the house. It is so true that if I spend all day in the house with no makeup on, still in the pajamas I slept in the night before, and my husband comes home at 5 pm, I feel like a slob – I feel like I haven’t done anything or gone anywhere. When I try to put on some make up and get dressed like I’m intending to go somewhere, I don’t necessarily get more done, but I feel more like a woman and like I did at least one thing for myself that day.
  2.  Make your bed – This, my friend explained, was simply a way to quickly tidy one part of the house so if the rest of the house is in shambles and you can’t possibly keep up with the dishes or the dirty clothes, at least your bed is tidy. It is meant to be a little bit of calm in the storm.
  3. Eat healthily – This one is self-explanatory because eating healthy means you feel and operate better. I also didn’t realize how difficult this could become with a little one occupying so much of my time. Just make sure you actually take time to sit down in your busy life and eat well-rounded meals. Sometimes, on the days where I am just running and running, I end up snacking here and there in order to keep going. I know I feel much better physically and emotionally when I am making healthy eating choices.

I know this was directed to a new mom, but it is great advice for every woman out there. When life gets crazy, just remember you can do it, and you can do these three simple things to keep from losing yourself.

What things do you do to keep from losing your mind when life gets crazy?
