Cleanse, tone, moisturize – that has been the traditional three-step cleansing system for years. Sometimes though, maybe due to lack of time, or too many other products to put on my face, I have skipped the toner all together. So, what are the benefits of using a toner and what can it do for your face?
- Toner shrinks pores. I personally love this aspect of toners. The astringent ingredients (sometimes alcohol) is what tightens the skin. You can find substitues for alcohol if it is too harsh on your skin.
- Toner catches everything the cleanser missed. I’m surprised how much comes off on my cotton ball when I use a toner after washing my face. For years, I have gone without using a toner, and I have been missing getting all of that grime and extra makeup off my skin.
- Toner helps balance the pH of your skin. This is where you’ll have to pay attention to your skin type and be aware of the alcohol level of the toner you use. High-alcohol toners will dry out your skin and take away from the natural oils on your face that you need to have a balance Ph.
- Toner can be used instead of facial wash in a hurry. In those instances where you don’t have time to wash, or don’t have a sink, toner can be a great, quick cleanser to wipe away the makeup and grime from your face.
You will find dozens of brands and types of toners on the market. You can go for expensive toner, or cheap toner from the grocery store. Whatever you do, make sure that you are using a good quality moisturizer after your toner so that you keep your skin from drying out. If you think you may be too lazy to add another step to your routine, you can also find cleanser/toner combinations.
