Stephen Knoll Salon
Stephen Knoll’s Biography
Born in Wisconsin, Stephen was already interested in hair design from early childhood. At age 11, he was coloring and cutting. By high school, already pushing existing limits of creativity, he was styling the hair of women in his hometown. That he would move to New York was inevitable.
After working for a brief period in NY’s top salons, Stephen began a flourishing freelance career, which led him to style for some of the most prestigious advertising campaigns, as well as editorial work appearing in magazines such as Vogue, Bazaar, In Style, Cosmo and countless other.
Opening his namesake salon in 1991, he became one of the few contemporary hair stylists active as both a salon and session stylist. Today, Stephen continues to work in his salon and as a photo session stylist, as well as traveling in the United States and abroad to work with his celebrity clients and other clients of luminary status.
The Salon
Stephen Knoll's luxurious Madison Avenue salon is the destination for women who demand the very best for their hair. Designed as a home away from home for Stephen's celebrity and model clientele, the 3,000 square foot salon employs 50 professionals who are specialists in their fields.
Servicing and average of 300 men and women per day, the salon clients are from all walks of life and include many that travel around the world to receive Stephen's personal recommendation and expert haircutting and styling advice.
The Stephen Knoll Experience
Because Stephen treats each client as the unique person she is, there is not any standard or recognizable "Stephen Knoll cut." Instead, every Stephen Knoll cut and style is an original classic – with an edge. “Just by taking a glance at any women, Stephen can create a style capturing the natural beauty of that person,” once said one of his many celebrity clients. But regardless of whether his client is a celebrity, or simply a woman who wants to look her best, Stephen's goal is to hear each client say, "I've never felt better about myself!" An appointment with Stephen Knoll begins with wet hair slicked back and Knoll studying face structure and hair texture, while conceptualizing the look he wants to achieve - then the design begins. The results? An easy to care for, natural shape reflecting movement and fluidity that, in Stephen’s words is "an accessory that complements, not overpowers."
