Prevent Razor Burn and Shaving Irritation

While there are tons of ways to get rid of unwanted hair, including waxing, laser treatments, Nair, etc., shaving remains one of the most common forms of hair removal for women. But too often shaving results in razor burn or irritation, neither of which are pleasant or attractive! So how do you get smooth results without irritating your skin? Here are some simple tips to help you prevent and calm irritation from shaving.

1. Use a sharp razor. Sometimes I find myself using the same razor for weeks at a time, just because I forget to switch it out. A dull blade is a sure way to irritate your skin and leave you with painful razor burn! So whether you use disposable razors, or disposable blades, switch them out frequently to keep your skin healthy!
2. Shave with, not against, the grain of the hair. Shave in the direction that the hair grows, and you will be much less likely to develop irritation bumps from shaving.
3. Don’t press too hard with your razor while you are shaving. This is an easy way to cause skin irritation, so lighten up a bit!
4. Don’t ever shave dry skin! Make sure your skin is thoroughly moistened before you try to shave. Hot water works best to soften the skin and make shaving easier. A shaving cream, on top of that, can also really help!
5. After you shave, soak a washcloth in water as hot as you can stand and leave it on the affected area for two minutes. This will help prevent irritation.
6. Don’t touch your skin too much after you shave for up to 8 hours. The oils in your hands can irritate freshly shaved skin.
7. Always use a good moisturizer after shaving. I love to use cocoa butter, but you can choose anything that keeps your skin soft and healthy.

I hope these tips help you keep razor burn and shaving irritation to a minimum!
