I like to talk about celebrities from time to time because, well, everyone sees everything they do so it can be a lot of fun to joke about and have a good time with. Like Anna Nicole Smith chasing her husband’s fortune or Britney Spear’s pregnant again and loosing her composure on national television. But some things celebrities do or say go too far and are not a laughing matter.
Mel Gibson was pulled over and arrested Friday morning for speeding and driving drunk in Las Angeles. During the ordeal, Gibson was making many anti-Semitic comments and was apparently quite violent and inappropriate in his language and even tried to escape. He had to be handcuffed and taken into the police station. To make matters worse, the L.A. Sheriff’s department is apparently trying to cover up the story and go easy on Mel Gibson because he has done commercials for them in the past and has repeatedly gotten away with drunk driving and speeding. The officer who performed the arrest was told to rewrite his report of the incident and to leave out the inflammatory things Gibson said because the current situation in Israel was ‘way to inflammatory’ right now.
Is this the kind of person we look up to? It is a sobering reminder that we have to be careful who we idolize and let set an example for our societies. Racial, ethnic, or religious slurs are never appropriate and should not be condoned or excused; and certainly not covered up by law enforcement just because the person making them is rich and influential.
Mel Gibson has issued an apology, but it is unclear right now if his career will be able to recover at this point. Some people think that this has ruined his career, while others say that as long as he makes movies that people are interested in seeing, they will overlook his past behavior.
